It’s July. The weather is, on the whole, pretty nice. I spend too much time at my desk. Also, I’ve developed a tendency to leave dailies until the wee hours of the night. (HAVE YOU NOTICED?) These two facts in mind, comes the July theme – every day, I’m going to go out into the world and find somebody or something to draw, journal-style. It’s something I haven’t done regularly since school, and frankly, I kind of miss it. Plus, it’ll give me a chance to document the wonderful world of Kingston, Ontario, an excellent place to spend a summer.
There was some generic Canada day stuff going on down by the waterfront today – barbecue, people with dogs, music, facepainting, and so on. Here are some people on the grass! The problem with drawing people facing in your direction is that eventually they tend to notice you staring at them, but when [...]
Drawn at the Fanatics sports bar, which makes basically my favourite pizza anywhere.
Back when I was doing these sorts of drawings regularly, I used to be pretty good at composing ‘em. It is not like riding a bike.
There is a distinct possibility I was up all night playing Mass Effect 2 and this was done in during sunrise.
My so-called balcony is actually the top of a sketchy walkup that feels like it’s going to collapse at any second and just generally creeps me out. The view is crap, so here are [...]
Been drawing these daily, but got a bit behind on posting – had people visiting, haven’t been home much.
I’m not too happy with the stuff I’m posting, either. But it’s been too long since I’ve done these kinds of drawings, so if they’re not coming out too great, all the more reason to do [...]
Here’s my friend Aggy, drawn during our Dungeons and Dragons session. (I’m an 8th-level Deva Avenger! Also, a nerd!) She does not really have an enormous head. Drawing in pen can get real frustrating when you know exactly what you’ve done wrong but can’t erase…
Also, for anybody who was following shirtmonth, [...]
I wish I’d had the chance to draw the lady this VERY INTENSE MAN was talking to before they both got up and walked away.
In theory, this is Aggy (she of the enormous head a couple of days back) and her boyfriend Ben. In practice, this is some sort of mountain man and his girlfriend, Katara.
I have trouble with likeness on the best of days, but drawn straight in pen, it’s pretty solidly in the category of “not [...]
Kingston Busker Festival = zillions of people sitting around watching buskers. I suppose I could have drawn the actual buskers, but…
This is Steph, who is my roomie for the summer. She’s getting a haircut. Why do I keep giving everyone enormous heads?
This is probably the closest I’ve ever been to a stranger, while drawing them, without them noticing. I was like two feet away from this guy and kept accidentally rocking the bench because of the weird position I was sitting in and STILL he did not so much as glance up from his book. [...]
Home for a few days. Here is the floor of my room featuring OH MY GAWD A PUPPY.
Okay, so he’s like 5 years old, but he’s still a puppy to me.
Here is my dad, who seemed to be attempting to sleep during the Mythbusters special, despite the fact a lot of really cool things were exploding.
My other dog, Skylar, is terrified of thunder. He goes and hides in the basement, cowering, and we put this cape on him to make him feel super brave because it does something to diffuse the somethingorother in the air and make him freak out less.
Go transit, I do not miss you much. A lady and a kid. The kid really didn’t have that creepy smile.
There comes a point when furtively drawing strangers and posting those drawings online no longer seems strange.
Still, every once in a while, I do get that feeling of “Man, I’m a total creeper, aren’t I?”
Because if I named the drawing of my dad after the thing he’s sitting on, I can do the same to my mother. Who is looking super-intense for reasons probably related to So You Think You Can Dance.
Yeah, uh, I wasn’t posting for a few days there, due to being at home and being [...]
Why yes, I am another day behind, thanks for noticing.
Had the last session of our summer D&D campaign today. Here’s Vince, our DM, looking super intense, trying to kill us with three guys who’re actually one guy who’s actually an alien. Because our campaign was cool like that.
The Goat’s a great hippie co-op type restaurant that makes excellent cake. This guy was reading a Dexter book with one hand, and using the other to eat his sandwich with a fork.
The hazards of living with an artist. Sometimes they will waltz uninvited into your room to draw you and your friends! THE NERVE.
As I’ve already offended a wide swath of friends and family with my grossly inaccurate portraiture, it seemed time to turn the Pen Of Failed Likeness on myself for a change. This would’ve been much easier had the only mirror in the apartment not been in the bathroom. Now not only do I [...]
Drew this while drinking an ice cap before exercising. I think it was a grad student meeting with her prof? That was my impression, at least.
I’ve been trying to loosen up a bit, but I think this one skirts past the edge of “loose” and well into “kind of a mess, actually”.
For somebody who doesn’t actually eat pitas, I spend a ludicrous amount of time hanging out here.
Here is an Aggy that kind of looks like an Aggy and not something else entirely. She is being SERIOUS and RESPECCING TO BOOMKIN.
If you understand that last sentence, congrats, you’re a nerd.
This was one of those rare and uncomfortable occasions where the draw-ees actually noticed me and came over to have a look. Luckily, they were pretty gracious about it.
Also, I ate pad thai.
Near the Metro. I’m not entirely sure what that particular machine does, exactly.
And so the month ends on a low note, back in the Pita Pit, with a Dan that looks kind of like a trucker with mannequin arms. Sorry, Dan. Shame that the last day had to be such an off day.
