January 17: Medieval Man

January 17: Medieval Man

If my French isn’t even worse than I think it is, this is an archer in the time of Henry II.

It’s been a while since I’ve inked anything in Illustrator instead of by hand. I can never decide which I like better – Illustrator creates such clean, accurate, consistent lines, complete with some rather elegant curves, but the somewhat raw look of something hand-inked, complete with imperfections and the odd shaky line, has a lot more life to it. I’ll probably just keep on doing both as the mood strikes me. Fake tones again, too, because vast expanses of flat greys are boring.

Technically, not a medieval man. The early 16th century would be considered Late Renaissance or Early Modern, in the broad use of the term Modern. That dude may well live to see the Peace of Westphalia, birth of the modern nation-state in Europe. If he doesn’t get the Plague.

Neeeeeeerd!

But then, what do I know? I had to go look up where I found this reference from in the first place. It was saved, with dozens of others, in a folder helpfully named “Armour”. I pretty much just browsed until I found something that looked fun to draw. =D
